Flash Gordon Finds Writers!

Sony Pictures is developing a remake/re-boot of the classic character Flash Gordon and things are beginning to heat up! THR is reporting that Sony has found its writers for Flash Gordon. "Sony has signed writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless to pen the script for the new take on the outer space tale, just a few months after winning rights to the title from Hearst." The two are currently penning Dracula: Year Zero for Universal and previously did Cobalt 60 for Zack Synder.

The film had been setup by Universal but their rights to it lapsed and Sony quickly picked up the rights from the original owner Hearst's King Features Syndicate. Brick Eisner who was originally attched to direct when Universal was helming the project, is still at this point directing with Neal Mortiz producing. The film is slated to release in 2010.

The Sony version of Flash Gordon will continue its 74 year tradition which was created by Alex Raymond as a science fiction comic strip that has spawned television series, movies, animated features, and comic books. Flash Gordon originally a polo player and Yale graduate (later versions have depicted him as a football player) who with his girlfriend Dale Harden and Dr. Hans Zarkov set out to find the source of meteors that are bombarding Earth. The three set out into the farest reaches of space following the source to a distant planet called Mongo in a rocketship created by Dr. Zarkov. The three quickly realize that the meteors are weapons that were created by Ming the Merciless, who is the evil ruler of Mongo. No casting has begun for the film and much is still to come on the development of Flash Gordon.

Thoughts on Flash Gordon? Who would be a good Flash Gordon? Have you seen the 1980 film? Will the new Flash feature a kick-ass soundtrack like the 80's film with Queen doing the score?
