Universal is Wicked!!

That's right, Universal Pictures is in early negotiations with Mark Platt Productions to develop Wicked and Jesus Christ Superstar for the big screen. Donna Langley, Universal's production president told Variety, "Our goal now is absolutely to make the Wicked film, but much like Judy Craymer wouldn't give up screen rights to Mamma Mia! until the stage show had reached its pinnacle, Marc and Stephen Schwartz are very mindful of the right timing. But we're dying to do it." Wicked has recently reached $1 billion mark in its worldwide stage gross. Which makes it a hot commodity for Universal to bring to the big screen.

I never seen Wicked, but have heard great things. The prospect of a film version of it is intriguing none the less. I have always loved Wizard of Oz and any re-invisions of the world of Oz. I am sure it would be a huge success, with the musical breaking all kinds of records in every country. The play centers around Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West and her relationship with Gilda, the Good Witch of the North. Their friendship struggles through their opposing personalities and viewpoints, rivalry over the same love-interest, their reactions to the Wizard's corrupt government, and, ultimately, Elphaba's public fall from grace.
